Proteção de leitura OBD is a professional ECU calibration service that prevents third-party tools from reading out your tuned file via the OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) diagnostic port. With the protection enabled, read attempts are blocked, while write/programming, dealer software updates and normal diagnostics remain fully available (where platform allows).

Protects calibration IP while maintaining serviceability

Proteção de leitura OBD is the ideal safeguard for tuners and workshops who want to protect their intellectual property and avoid unauthorized copies of bespoke calibrations. Modern ECUs expose multiple diagnostic services over OBD (UDS – Unified Diagnostic Services, KWP – Keyword Protocol, or manufacturer-specific protocols). The protection calibration edits the ECU’s access control to negar a leitura da memória from flash areas containing your calibration, while preserving write/programming, dealer updates and diagnostics (where platform allows).

Importante: OBD Reading Protection is a specialized service. The protection can be applied to your tuned file as an add-on. Request availability for your specific ECU family via our tuning service page ou custom quote form.

What OBD Reading Protection Does

A readout usually leverages seed-key access, diagnostic service $22 (ReadDataByIdentifier), $23 (ReadMemoryByAddress), $27 (SecurityAccess), or vendor-defined routines. The Proteção de leitura OBD calibration modifies the ECU’s access control and/or read routine mapping to prevent memory readback from flash areas that contain your calibration.

What remains functional:

  • Programação (gravação/flash) – updated files can still be written via OBD, master tools, and bench/boot methods remain unaffected
  • Atualizações do revendedor – manufacturer software updates stay operational where supported by the platform
  • Standard diagnostics – DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) read/clear, live data, adaptations, and service functions remain available
  • Virtual read – in many ECUs, tools can fetch stock file from database, but reading your actual tuned image via OBD is blocked

When to Use OBD Reading Protection

  • After delivering custom remap – prevent competitors from copying your file via OBD diagnostic port
  • Multi-installer networks – protect IP across fleet, franchise, or dealership branches
  • Motorsport and R&D vehicles – where file confidentiality is critical for competitive advantage
  • Rental/lease or track-day cars – vehicles that should not expose the tune to third parties
  • High-value bespoke calibrations – custom dyno maps, hybrid turbo setups, flex-fuel configurations

Benefits and Technical Notes

  • Protects the imagem de calibração from unauthorized extraction over OBD diagnostic port
  • Keeps facilidade de manutenção intact – diagnostics and updates remain functional on supported platforms
  • Works alongside your normal tuning workflow – OBD write, bench/boot procedures unaffected
  • Reversible – the protection can be removed if you need to revert to stock or migrate to another configuration
  • Does not affect ECU performance, fuel economy, or drivability – purely access control modification
⚠ Important considerations: Behavior can vary by ECU family, tool vendor, and firmware level. Always test your specific toolchain (master/slave configuration, brand, protocol) after enabling protection. This feature is intended for uso profissional by tuners and workshops. On many platforms, dealer online updates remain possible – after a dealer flash, the tune and protections may be overwritten by stock software and will need reapplying.

Protection Can Be Applied To

Additional ECU families and brands are available on request. Coverage is continuously expanded; if your platform is not listed, contact support with ECU family, microcontroller type (MCU – MicroController Unit) and tool used (OBD/Bench/Boot).

How to Request OBD Reading Protection

  1. Order tuning file – request your Stage 1/2/3 or custom tuning file via our tuning service
  2. Add protection request – in the order notes or via custom quote form, specify you need OBD Reading Protection
  3. Verify compatibility – our team confirms if your ECU family supports the protection feature
  4. Receive protected file – you get the tuned file with OBD read protection already applied and checksums corrected
  5. Test functionality – after flashing, verify that write operations and diagnostics work as expected with your toolchain

Observação: Protection is applied to the file you receive from us. You flash this protected file to the ECU using your normal programming method (OBD, bench, boot). The protection is then active in the ECU’s memory.

Technical Notes

  • How it works: modifies ECU access control tables and/or diagnostic service handlers to deny memory read operations while preserving write and diagnostic access
  • What stays accessible: DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), live data streams, actuator tests, adaptations, coding functions
  • Tool compatibility: works with master tools that write via OBD; slave/clone tools behavior may vary depending on implementation
  • Reversibility: protection can be disabled by flashing a non-protected file (your backup or new tune without protection flag)
  • Bench/boot access: physical bench reading methods (BDM – Background Debug Mode, JTAG, boot mode) can still read the ECU if someone has physical access – this protection targets OBD port specifically
  • Dealer interaction: manufacturer diagnostic tools typically use different authentication levels and may retain read access; protection primarily targets aftermarket tuning tools
Best practices for using OBD Reading Protection:

  • Always keep an unprotected backup of your calibration file for your own records
  • Test write functionality and diagnostics after first protected file installation
  • Document which vehicles have protected files for your service records
  • Inform customers that dealer updates may overwrite protection (and the tune itself)
  • Consider bench/boot reading prevention for highest security (requires hardware modifications)

⚠ Note on dealer visits: On many platforms, dealer online updates remain possible. After a dealer flash, the tune and protections may be overwritten by stock software and will need reapplying. This is normal behavior – the dealer update replaces the entire calibration. Customers should be informed that dealer updates will remove tuning and require re-flashing your protected tune afterward.
