Secondary Air Pump (SAP) Removal Explained

SAP Removal disables the ECU logic for the Secondary Air Injection system (often called Secondary Air Pump). This system injects fresh air into the exhaust stream during cold start to accelerate catalyst light-off and reduce emissions. When the pump, combination valve, or control solenoid fails, the ECU sets DTCs, triggers a MIL, and may alter startup behavior. The calibration below removes those SAP diagnostics so the vehicle runs normally without SAP-related errors.

When to Use

  • After removing or blocking the SAP pump/valve due to failure or custom exhaust setup.
  • Recurring DTCs such as P0410, P0411, P0412–P0419 (system/flow/valve/electrical) and readiness failures.
  • Track/off-road applications where the secondary air system is no longer required.
  • Cold start surge or noise issues linked to SAP operation on tuned engines.

Technical Overview

The SAP subsystem typically includes a pump (electric or belt-driven), a combination/check valve, control solenoids/relays, and ECU diagnostics for flow and circuit integrity. During the first seconds after start, the ECU commands the pump and valve, then verifies airflow via O2 response and pressure/flow plausibility. If components are deleted or faulty, DTCs and readiness flags are set.

  • Inputs: coolant/ambient temperature, time since start, O2 sensor feedback, pressure/flow signals (where fitted).
  • Outputs: pump/solenoid commands, valve duty, fault timers and plausibility checks.
  • Diagnostics: circuit open/short, stuck valve, insufficient flow, O2 reaction missing or delayed.

SAP Removal disables the SAP monitoring and readiness logic while keeping the rest of the emission and drivability strategies intact. It does not modify warm-engine fueling or closed-loop operation.
