MAF Sensor

🧠 Part of the TuningBot ECU Knowledge Base — in-depth documentation on ECU logic, maps, emissions systems and safe calibration methods.

The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor measures the mass of air entering the engine. This is a critical input for fuel injection calculation, smoke limiter function, and torque modeling in both diesel and gasoline engines.

Обзор

Hot-wire or hot-film MAF sensors measure air mass directly by monitoring the cooling effect of intake air on a heated element. This provides accurate readings regardless of air temperature or density.

Sensor Types

  • Hot-wire MAF — heated wire element
  • Hot-film MAF — heated film element (more durable)
  • Integrated temperature — includes IAT sensor

ECU Usage

  • Fuel injection calculation
  • Smoke limiter (diesel)
  • Torque model input
  • EGR flow calculation
  • Boost control feedback

Calibration Considerations

  • MAF scaling must match actual sensor output
  • Upgraded turbos may exceed stock MAF range
  • Aftermarket intakes may affect MAF reading

Диагностика

  • MAF range/performance faults
  • MAF/MAP correlation errors
  • Implausible readings vs calculated airflow

Best Practices

  • Clean MAF sensor regularly (use MAF cleaner only)
  • Verify MAF scaling after intake modifications
  • Replace MAF if readings drift significantly
