How the AdBlue / SCR system works

The SCR system injects AdBlue fluid into the exhaust upstream of the SCR catalyst. The urea decomposes to ammonia, which reacts with NOx gases to reduce emissions. Control is usually managed by a dedicated AdBlue ECU (DCU or ACM) that communicates with the engine ECU via CAN. If the tank is empty or components fail, the system can trigger DTCs, dashboard warnings, torque limitation or start countdowns.

With a correctly engineered AdBlue removal calibration, these specific routines and diagnostic triggers are disabled in the ECU software, while all other engine protection and non-SCR diagnostics remain active.
